Pet Care Training For the Masses
Pet care training is an important aspect of owning any type of pet, whether it is a dog, a cat or even a mouse, you must make sure that you are taking care of your pet and you can do this by pet care training. Most pets can be trained, and it is a fact that most pets need to be trained and cared for in order for both you and the animal to be happy. When it comes to training and taking care of your pet, you should take the most humane approach and remember, hitting and shouting are definite no no’s when it comes to pet care training.
An important tip in pet care training to remember is that animals respond well to praise and treats. So if you are training a dog or a cat to use a litter tray or a training mat, always make sure that you make a big fuss of your pet. This will not only please them, but it will let them know that they are receiving this kind of attention by doing something good which will encourage them to do it again. Another important tip when it comes to pet care training is that you should never punish your pet for doing something wrong. Never hit or shout at your pet because this will only make the animal scared and they will not understand why they have elicited such behaviour. So instead of scolding or hitting, simply ignore your pet if he does something wrong, and always make sure that you reward anything positive that he does.
When it comes to pet care training, there are plenty of classes that you can take your dog to. These classes help you to learn how to take care of your dog properly and how to train him in ways which will be effective and efficient. You should try to attend a class like this at least once a week with your dog and this will not only help you and your pet to bond, but it is an important part of taking care of your pet and training him at the same time.
In order for your pet to remain happy and healthy, you must make sure that you take him regularly to see the vet. Dogs and cats tend to need shots to protect them against diseases that they can pick up when they are out and about, and they also need to maintain healthy weights just like you and I. This is why visiting a vet regularly is important in your pet care training regime.
Pet Sitters Or Dog Kennel?
Most people consider their dog an important part of the family and their happiness and well-being is as important as a human member of the family. Unfortunately, our ‘fur kids’ cannot always accompany us on vacations or business trips. Many of us stress over what to do with our pets when we must leave them behind.
As a pet sitter and dog owner, and foster mom, I have some ideas to consider. The truth is there is no one right answer. The alternatives include kennels, friends and neighbors, or pet sitters. Things to consider include the age of your dog, his need for social attention, his exercise level, health, length of trip, and your budget.
Let’s start with dog kennels. If you dog is a dog’s dog, a kennel might be a great solution. If he likes being around other dogs and the sound of other dogs barking does not stress him, this is your easy answer. Senior dogs or puppies, high stress/intense dogs, or dogs with medical issues may not do well in this situation.
Friends or family may or may not be a good solution. I once had a dog that bolted at the first sight of an open door. I was in tune with this, but other people were not. While everyone loved her, I would not risk leaving her with friends or family who could accidentally let her out. The only way I could enjoy a vacation was knowing that she was in Fort Knox! Also, consider how a mishap on either end would impact your relationship. Ie: dog fight with their dog resulting in injury, dog messing on carpets, dog not sleeping through night, dog biting someone. The list goes on. Sometimes the savings is not worth it. But, sometimes it is. If you have a low maintenance dog, this may be a good alternative.
Pet sitters can be a good option if your dog is more sedentary and independent and does well left alone at home. Especially if the trip is short. Some dogs do just fine with a few daily visits per day. Their routine is not interrupted and it is a low stress option in many cases. The dog also is not exposed to outside viruses, such as kennel cough. If there are multiple pets, this option may be more economical as well.
Read Before You Have Your Next Pet
Many people and families would like to have a pet. Yet not all people realize the responsibilities of raising a pet. Caring for a dog cat bird or a fish perhaps lies on all the members of the household. That’s why the decision of getting a pet should be agreed upon by all the members of the family.
There are many factors to consider before getting one. First you must remember that you are forming a relationship with this animal. Like any relationships it requires caring loving nurturing and most of all time. This little animal depends on you for caring feeding and much more. The second factor is budgeting. Is it in your budget to buy pet food toys for your pet seek medical attention it the occasion arouse for. You know it cost money to raise a pet and that is extra expense on your household budget, can you afford it? The third factor is your home size; do you have the room or the extra space for your pet? You have to consider the space your pet will occupy.
Pet Dog:
A dog is mans best friend. Having a dog for a pet is a big responsibility; it could change your life style. There are some things to consider before you get a dog:
1- Dogs need considerable space to run around and walk.
2- You have to have time to take your dog for a walk out side 2 to 3 times a day.
3- Dogs diet requires variety of dog food, dog treats, and dog snacks. It is important to keep your pet healthy.
4- Dogs owner has to have their pet examined and vaccinated by veterinarian every year.
5- Having a dog for a pet is an expensive hobby.
Pet Cat:
Cats are great. Cats do not require as much care as a dog. Of course they do need some care. All pets need care. What you should consider before having a cat:
1-Cats need feeding daily and that require you purchase different type of cat food. You have to buy dry cat food and moist cat food. And cat food also comes in variety of flavors; you have to consider buying few different flavors.
2-You need to know that cats like to scratch their claws, and they will do that all over your furniture and doors.
3-Cats love to play so they need your attention and time to play with you.
4-Cats do get sick like every animal; visit to the veterinarian is inevitable.
5-You need to have cat food, cat treats, cat toys, cat bedding, cat litter, cat water and food bowls, cat charms.
Bird for Pet:
Birds are very nice and lots of fun, I have some. You have to keep in mind all pet need a clean environment no matter what they are or what size. Birds are the same thing.
1-Birds make mess in the cage and in the surrounding area. So you have to keep cleaning after them every day specially the surrounding area and clean the inside of the cage weakly.
2-Every morning you have to give your bird fresh bowl of seeds and fresh water. Keep mixture of seeds (bird food) always in your home.
3-Bird supplies consist of bird food (seed mixture), millet spray (bird treat), cutlet bone (calcium bone), bird toys you leave inside the cage.
At the end you have to prepare your self before you get your next pet. Pets are like children they need care and loving. Pets give pleasure and fulfillment to their owners, and that is why you want to have a pet.
Cleaner Pet Care – Dog Paper Training
One of the most important training decisions a new pet owner will make is how to go about housebreaking their four-legged family member. Toilet training a dog can be a tedious and frustrating task. In general, dogs are willing learners and want to please you. However, getting the correct message across can be difficult. You cannot explain the reasons you do not want your pup to go in the corner of the living room or near your houseplant. Instead, you must utilize a little bit of know-how and a lot of patience so your pup gets the hint.
Potty training a dog is very important, especially earlier in life. This will set the tone for the dog’s habits later on. You can housebreak an older dog. However, it can be much more difficult. Consider the options available before starting the training process. This will help you set a clear course for success, rather than jumping from one dog toilet training method to the next. Doing so can confuse your pup and cause potential dog potty training problems.
There are two main approaches to toilet training your dog. The first, and most common, is to teach your pet to relieve itself outside. A good way to go about it is to always use the same part of yard. This will train your pup to always go to this area, keeping the rest of the yard clean. It also helps them understand exactly where you want them to go for such activity. This method takes practice, but in the end, you will not have to deal with any mess in your house. The only down side is your yard can get messy, and may require clean up every so often. This method can also become a chore during the winter months, should you live in an area that sees a lot of snowfall and cold temperatures, or a lot of rain during spring. No matter what, you will have to brave the weather or risk an accident!
A second method is indoor dog potty training, or paper training. This type of housebreaking is popular among those who live in apartments or urban areas with little or no grass. During bad weather, you can be thankful you do not have to grab your jacket or umbrella to go outside. This also eliminates the problem of being ready the moment Fido feels the natural urge. On the other hand, this method is usually better utilized with small dog potty training. There is also more potential for indoor accidents, should your dog become confused by a furniture move or any other changes in your home. On top of that, you have to remember that your dog will be relieving itself inside, which means you will have to clean up daily.
Unlike outdoor dog toilet training, paper training a dog requires less waste being left in the environment. It is a cleaner option and will also leave your yard looking pristine and lush. If you choose a paper dog training technique, keep in mind that a puppy does not have a well developed bladder. It will take time for your little furry friend to develop his ability to hold it. Remember to stick to a schedule to keep accidents to a minimum. Every forty-five minutes or less, take your pup to the potty area. In no time, he will understand you want him to go there and become a well trained member of the family!
Putting Your Pet Out to Pasture
Don’t let the title fool you. This is not an article about your pet getting old. The title is just a “hook” to encourage you to read on. Hopefully, when you do, you will find this a very informative article relating to your pet’s health, or at least your understanding of some aspects of it.
I actually want to talk to you about grass. That’s right…grass. More specifically, I want to talk to you about why dogs and cats eat grass.
I think we would be hard-pressed to find anyone who has not witnessed this peculiarity of domestic animals at one time or another. When it is our pet, however, it can cause us concern and, if we let our imaginations go unchecked, it can cause us alarm.
It has been my experience that on occasion, that alarm can lead to unnecessary expense as we panic and rush our best friend off to the nearest veterinarian, only to hear him tell us with a chuckle “he’s okay, it’s normal for him to eat grass. How embarrassing is that!
Why is it normal for our pets to consume grass? They all do it if they are allowed access to it. Are they not getting the right nourishment? Are they ill? These are all unsettling, but reasonable questions.
More unsettling is that invariably shortly after ingesting the grass, perhaps 20 minutes later, they regurgitate it back up in a kind of green gooey mess (sorry to be so graphic). Why would they do this? Why would they do something that appears to be so hard on their system, or maybe even harmful to them? Should I be alarmed?
The short answer is “no, don’t panic”. As I mentioned earlier, any veterinarian will tell you that this is normal behavior. The very fact that all pets do it should suggest to you that it is not a bad thing.
The long or more detailed answer is that the outdoors is an animal’s natural world and grass is part of that world. You and I can turn on the radio or television and be kept up to date on what is happening in our world. For dogs and cats, the ground is their primary source of connection with their world.
The ground is like a giant newspaper for them. They interpret the odors and conditions to discover what other dogs have been visiting their turf and what they did there. They “read” the yard to know what is happening in the world outside the house. With their heightened senses, they perceive when another dog or cat has been on their turf, whether it rained the night before, that so and so is in heat, or that the season is changing.
Additionally, the role the ground plays in our pet’s lives does not end at bringing them the news. Through their own “contributions”, they communicate to future visitors of that site who the yard belongs to, who they are and what they are about. Sometimes the deposit is meant as a welcome, other times a warning. It just depends on what the news is for that day.
But in keeping with the primary theme of this article, the ground is also the local canine and feline drug store. Perhaps it could more accurately be called the local natural herb store.
I don’t know how many times I have heard someone ignorantly say “look at that stupid dog eating grass”. The truth is, they are not stupid at all, but are rather quite savvy natural pharmacists. I think most people would be surprised to learn that animals know a whole lot more about herbs than we do. I concede it may be more of an instinctive knowledge than cognitive understanding, but it is knowledge nonetheless.
In fact, their understanding of herbal remedies is awesome. Have you ever noticed that they don’t eat just any grass…they sniff around until they find exactly what they are looking for? Like the aisles in a drug store, each section of the outdoors holds different remedies.
For instance, certain grasses and sprouts are sought out and taken as internal cleansers. They cause vomiting; something we have all witnessed. This vomiting is the expected result for your pet. They know when they eat it that it will cause this reaction, yet they do it willingly and with purpose.
They instinctively know that it will cleanse their body of bile and other items that are not digestible. Anyone who loves and keeps animals knows that there are a lot of items that qualify in this category, from shoes to yarn to hair to some of the most extraordinary items.
While it is unsettling to know that they are not smart enough to figure out that swallowing a sock is not a good thing, it is comforting that they are usually savvy enough to know how to extricate it from their system before it becomes a problem or threat. This only emphasizes the importance of their having access to the outdoors on a regular basis.
Continuing, there is more to their natural pharmacy than just cleansers. Other grasses and herbs help evict or terminate worms and other parasites in their system. Still others provide needed minerals and nutrients and enhance digestive enzymes and acids. Uncannily, they all seem to know what remedy is needed for exactly whatever ails them at the moment.
Then, perhaps the biggest benefit to them is the presence of chlorophyll in most grasses. Chlorophyll helps to fight infection, enrich the coat and even relieves pain such as joint aches. It can also enhance cartilage soundness and offers a host of other benefits.
I know all this sounds a bit simplistic, but it really is not that complicated. The truth is that animals appear to know more about these things than you and I do and certainly more than we would think they should know. I am not sure “how” they know, but it is enough to accept that they do know, without having to know the “why”.
Modern medicine has actually taken a step backwards to develop more primitive remedies as a result of a closer study of this savvy in animals. Science is now recognizing that many of the grass roots (pardon the pun) remedies nature provides for our pets are as good as, if not better than synthetic drugs.
In fact, people are learning how to cultivate and produce certain herbs and grasses to help their pets, even freezing summer crops for winter dispensing when grasses are not in season. This can be especially helpful to cats and other mammals who are not allowed to venture outdoors, but who still need to ingest some of the natural cleansing agents found there.
Next time you see your pet eating grass, don’t worry about it. They are doing something to help their health. Just give them time to allow the process to culminate before you let them back in on your carpet.
Feline Dental Care – Why Clean Your Cat’s Teeth
There is more to being a loving cat owner than just feeding and playing with your little feline friend, a lot more. You have to do those things to, but you are also responsible for ensuring your cat’s health, and that includes taking care of your cat’s dental needs. Sure, you take your cat to the veterinarian when you are supposed to, and of course, he cleans and checks your cat’s teeth when you are there, but you should really be performing cat dental care at home as well. When it comes to your own dental care, you couldn’t go to the dentist twice a year and then walk around the rest of the time without ever brushing your teeth, or eating a breath mint…well, technically you could, but you would probably have a severe case of halitosis, not to mention be missing a few teeth sooner or later! Just as you can’t get by with that kind of dental care, neither can your cat!
When it comes to cat dental care, it is very similar to your own dental care. Food and plaque build up on your cat’s teeth and gums, and if left to sit there for long periods of time, will slowly start to eat away at your cat’s teeth, leading to tooth decay, oral infections, lost teeth, and even gum disease. All of these conditions are very detrimental to your cat’s health, impacting his ability to eat properly, leading to poor nutrition, and even more health problems, all that could be avoided with some general cat dental care.
When you take your cat to the veterinarian, he is placed under general anesthesia for his dental care, so it may take him some time to get used to you messing around in his mouth at first. At the veterinarian, your cat gets his teeth cleaned, and examined for any potential problems. Most of the time, this doesn’t get too expensive, unless you have neglected your cat’s dental care, in which case more extensive dental care may be required. So, not only can you protect your cat’s health by performing home dental care, you can also save yourself a lot of money in veterinary bills as well! Just another reason why you should take the time to clean your cat’s teeth, just once a week will make a big difference.
You can brush and care for your cat’s teeth at home, and should do so on a regular basis. Talk to your veterinarian for his suggestions, and follow his instructions. You can purchase small cat toothbrushes that fit on the end of your finger from your local pet supply store, and toothpaste designed particularly for feline use. If you have not brushed your cat’s teeth before, he may not be very happy with this procedure. You should start by letting your cat get used to having your finger in his mouth, and once he accepts that, then move on to getting him use to the toothbrush, before you even try to brush his teeth. Once he accepts the toothbrush in his mouth with minimal fuss, you can add the toothpaste and start brushing his teeth.
If you don’t have the time or desire to care for your cat’s dental needs at home, you should take him to the veterinarian for regular dental care, as his teeth still need to be properly cared for. If you have pet insurance, it may not be as expensive as you think, definitely not as expensive as having to have major cat dental work done, which is what will happen if you neglect your cat’s dental needs.
So, whether you provide your cat’s dental care at home, or you have your veterinarian do it on a regular basis is up to you, but it is part of your responsibility as a pet owner to make certain your cat’s dental needs are being met, however you choose to do it. Don’t put your cat’s health at risk just because you don’t have time or want to brush his teeth!
Pet Turtle Care
Turtles are fascinating pets to own, but many people get them not knowing how to care for them. They need to have the right amount of space, light, shade, and moisture to survive. You need to learn what turtles require before you get one.
The best place to keep a turtle is outside. Turtles hibernate in the winter and if they are kept inside they won’t hibernate. This can cause them to develop liver diseases. A turtle’s natural cycle should not be messed with. Also, if you keep a turtle pen outside you can create a completely natural turtle habitat.
Some people that keep turtles inside use refrigerators to make them hibernate. This is not recommended though because if the refrigerator suddenly rises in temperature or if the power goes off, the turtle’s hibernation will be interrupted. This can be fatal for them. If you plan on keeping your pets inside, just don’t let them hibernate.
Also, if you keep your turtle inside, you must have a tank that is at least forty gallons. There has got to be enough room to have a land area and a water area. Two-thirds of the aquarium should be water and one-third should be land. You also need a place where they can lay in the heat of a lamp. You should keep the tank around eighty degrees during the day and seventy degrees at night. Turtles are cold blooded animals so they take a long time to adjust to temperature changes. For this reason, you should not take the turtle out of the tank to play with it. This sudden change in temperature can harm their immune system.
Some turtles do carry salmonella so be sure to wash your hands after handling them. Your turtle’s environment also needs to be kept clean. Keep the water fresh and keep any waste out. You might want to get a water filtration system to keep the water clean.
You should not use tap water for the tank, because tap water contains chlorine and fluoride. This can really mess up the ph balance. De-chlorinated water needs to be used for the swimming area and filtered water for them to drink. There are many commercial diets available for turtles. Dietary requirements differ depending on the species. You should feed your pet two to three times a week.
Do not put any wood chips or tree bark in your tank. If a turtle ingests this, it can cause problems. It will also get contaminated very quickly and cause molds or fungus to grow.
Turtles need twelve hours of sunlight. You should get a UV lamp for your tank to provide the vitamin D3 that sunlight gives off if you keep it inside. They need this to stay healthy. This is why you will often see turtles sitting out in the sun. Try to keep the tank in a room where the light doesn’t change that much.
Turtles also need a shelter to go in. They are sold at pet stores, but you can also make one using wood or stones. If you decide to keep plants in with your turtle, just make sure they aren’t poisonous to them.
Try to pay attention to your turtle’s behavior and take care of it the best you can. Turtles are very interesting to watch and will provide lots of enjoyment for your whole family.
Why Cats Make Better Pets
I’m sure a lot of people will protest when I proclaim that cats are better than dogs. For all those dog lovers or dog owners out there – I have a message for you – accept the above truth with a brave heart. There are an endless number of reasons why a cat is much better than a dog as a pet. The first reason and it’s a really important reason – is that a cat is a very graceful animal. It will always respect your private space and expect the same from you too. Thus you don’t need to get hysterical when you have a cat as your pet – instead imagine how a dog keeps jumping around you all the time – the affection part is fine but they tend to overdo it, thus getting on your nerves.
You don’t to take a cat for a walk. It will go out all by itself. But if you have a dog, you will definitely have to take it for a walk, even if you have just had a very tiresome day, full of work. Or imagine taking your dog out in the rains or when it’s too cold to venture outside your house. You can also leave a cat all by itself for a long time without needing to worry about it. This is just not possible when you have a dog as a pet. You cannot dream of going out anywhere without making some arrangements for your dog. You also need to spend a lot of money on dog food, if you have a dog at your place – compared to that the cost of cat food is very reasonable.
And this is for all the guys who say that a dog is very faithful – what about the fact that all dogs revoltingly lick their bottoms and then show you their loyalty and love by licking you immediately on your face – yuck. You cannot even dream that a cat will even try such a stunt. A cat’s purring is definitely soothing to everyone, on the other hand, a dog’s barking can be very disturbing – many people get a real start when a dog starts barking suddenly, without reason. Have you ever smelt a dog from close – if your answer is a no – that’s good – don’t even try doing that! Cats don’t smell bad at all. A cat will never create a mess or land in a mess. Instead it tries to always keep itself clean. Can we say the same about a dog – how often do we see dogs all rolled up in all those messy puddles.
The best part about a cat is that they never mess up the carpet or the sofa. Miraculously they seem to have an in-built system which trains them in potty manners. Can you even expect the same from a dog? I can go on and on about the benefits an owner enjoys when he or she has a cat as a pet instead of a dog. But I hope the above points will definitely help you to decide to opt for a cat, the next time you are planning to keep a pet at your place.

Pet Care – Making the Best Of Life
An associate shared this heart-rending story with me about his pet and I’ll repeat it here in his own words.
I had the most lovely Rotweiler female dog. She was about two years old when I bought her. She had a strong personality, but was sweet, loving and affectionate to me. I named her Snoopy. She was a career watch dog. I kept her on a long tether line attached to a strong steel post. Every day she would go for a long walk with me.
When I moved to a more rural setting she had her own fenced off yard, to play in. Life was good. She loved to go for walks on the mountain side behind where we lived. Snoopy’s world was one of smell. She loved to go sniffing in a ground squirrel’s burrow. She would spend a lot of time digging up the hole. The dirt would go flying behind her, as she became a dirty, soil covered mess. She would dig until tired, and even then it was difficult, to pull her away from the hole.
Snoopy was a very intelligent dog. I talked to her all the time. She seemed to understand a great deal of the English language and would get all excited if I asked her if she wanted to go for a drive in the car. Then she would saunter off to the door, and wait for me to go out with her. She did much the same thing if I asked her, if she wanted to go for a walk. Snoopy would gesture with her head and paws to communicate. Some times it was almost like we were psychically linked. I would wake up at night from a deep sleep, when she wanted to go out side.
Snoopy had thick black and brown hair. Twice a year she would shed her coat. The heaviest hair loss was in spring, when her winter coat was shed. The lighter hair loss came in fall as she prepared to put on her winter coat. I would try to comb her every day when she was shedding hair. Brushing her hair yielded bunches of her black fur so at this time of year brushing her coat became a major element of her pet care routine.
Even though we were very active, taking mountain walks each day, Snoopy, started putting on a lot of weight. She was so heavy, I could not have lifted her. She was about the size of a small sheep.
Off and on she would have stomach problems. I noticed she was developing a pot belly. She would eat a lot of grass on days when she didn’t feel well. Sometimes I would help her, by picking the blades of grass for her, and then feed them to her. She was a strong dog. She could pull me along behind, dragging me holding her leash.
As time went on she continually had stomach problems, separated by days when she felt better. The size of her abdomen also grew larger. Each day we still faithfully went on her walk. She would come to me when she thought it was time to go walking, and remind me that she wanted to go. As time went on her rest periods during our walks, grew more frequent and longer. Some times we did about half and half, walking and sitting. I would carry a water bottle for Snoopy so she could drink. She always became thirsty on her walks.
Snoopy started developing tumours on the out side of her fur coat. From time to time, I checked her coat and noted she was developing more tumours, on her sides and shoulders. I suspected the large mass in her abdomen was also a tumour.
Sometimes her food seemed to make her feel sick. In her last week she found a bunch of bird bones in the forest and insisted on eating them. She really enjoyed eating those bones. I knew her days were numbered and did not want to deprive her of any last pleasures. The day after she ate the bones she felt really sick. She didn’t eat her food for a couple of days after that. Instead she went looking for grass, when we were out walking. In a few days she felt better again. All the grass we picked together, must have helped. She sure ate a lot of grass. She had a few last good days. Snoopy really enjoyed life on her good days. She enjoyed going exploring so much, on the mountain side. On her good days one could almost forget, that she had a growing problem.
Snoopy became sick again and this time couldn’t keep down food or water. I would try to give her little drinks, hoping her stomach would keep the water down. She just threw it up, a short time later. On her last morning I woke up, hearing Snoopy coughing violently. I ran to help her. She was in a life and death struggle to breath. I tried to clear her throat, swatting her on the back of the neck. It was too late. She went unconscious and died in my arms. I was heart broken. My best friend had died. Her departure ended her cancer, but left me lost, with a gigantic hole in my life. Snoopy was the best part of my life.
